What does marathon weekend ask of portable restrooms downtown?
The start line on Congress Avenue and the finish at Lamar and Crawford are about as far apart as a downtown route gets, and runners need toilets at both ends. An older Houstonia magazine account put the number brought in for marathon weekend at about 400 portable restrooms, which shows the scale involved. Treat that as indicative rather than current. The 2026 race ran on Sunday, January 11.
Race organisers deal with the providers directly for the course. If you are planning something smaller around the same weekend, such as a pre-race pasta dinner on a private lot or a charity meet-up, the same call line works. The marathon and race restroom page explains how banks of units are usually laid out for runners.
Ask the provider whether units can be set out before the road closes and how they will be reached for servicing once it has.
How do Pride Houston and the Art Car Parade differ for restroom planning?
Both are parades, but they run on different clocks. The Pride Houston parade steps off at Smith and Lamar around 7:30 pm, and the 2026 festival ran from 11 am to 10 pm at City Hall. The 2025 crowd was estimated at over 200,000, though older figures of 400,000 and 700,000 are quoted by various sources, so no one number should be trusted.
The Art Car Parade is an afternoon event. The 39th annual weekend ran April 9 to 12, 2026, with the parade on Saturday, April 11 from 2 to 4 pm, 250 or more cars and, according to the organisers, more than 315,000 spectators. A long evening festival needs restrooms and handwash stations that hold up for hours, while an afternoon parade needs them thick along the route.
Our street festival and parade restroom page goes through spacing and servicing questions for both.
Who do you ask before restrooms go on a downtown street?
The Mayor's Office of Special Events issues Street Function and Festival/Fair permits. Applications go to City Hall, 1st Floor, 901 Bagby Street, Houston 77002. According to the city's paperwork, minor street functions are filed at least 40 days ahead and major ones at least 120 days ahead, with plan review.
The same paperwork says portable toilets are obtained by the event producer based on projected attendance: 1 unit per 300 persons, 10 percent of them wheelchair accessible, and 1 handwashing station per 300 persons. That is the city's wording, and it is written for events that go through the city.
A portable-toilet provider does not issue permits, and Houston Porta Potty Rental cannot approve or predict one. The Houston special event permit guide walks through the sheet in more detail.
What does a downtown summer do to your unit choice?
Houston has issued repeated heat advisories, with temperatures at or above 105 F and a heat index near 112. Hobby Airport logged 190 hours at or above a 105 heat index in June and July in recent years. A plain portable unit on blacktop between towers is a hard place to spend a few minutes in that weather.
That is the reason the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo moved to climate-controlled restroom trailers with sinks and running water in its busiest areas. For a downtown summer gathering where guests will queue, ask your provider about a flushable restroom trailer and shade for the line.
Hurricane season overlaps the same months, so a good plan includes who calls whom if the weather changes.
