Is a restroom trailer worth it compared with a row of portable toilets?
It is worth it when comfort matters to the guests: long summer events, formal occasions, older crowds or places where a dozen cabins will not fit. For a short job-site rental, standard units make more sense. Many Houston organizers mix both, with the trailer for guests and cabins for the overflow.
The rodeo's own experience is useful. It ran standard portables for decades, then added flushable, climate-controlled trailers with running-water sinks in its busiest areas. That is a sign of what guests now expect when the event is large and the day is long, and it does not mean every event should follow.
Ask what the trailer replaces. If it means fewer plain cabins and one less queue at a wedding, the extra spend is easy to justify. If you need twenty units for a work crew, a trailer is the wrong tool.
What does a trailer need at my site?
A trailer needs level ground, a route wide and clear enough for a tow vehicle, and whatever connections the provider specifies for power and water. Ask the provider what it will bring and what you must supply. Do not connect, drain or move the trailer yourself.
The details differ between providers and between trailer sizes, so this page does not list them. What you can do is gather the answers the provider will ask for: how wide the gate is, whether the ground is paved or turf, where the nearest power is and how far the trailer will sit from the guests.
On city property, the Mayor's Office of Special Events issues Street Function and Festival/Fair permits, and the permit paperwork covers the restroom plan. Ask the office about any rule for trailers on your site, since this call line cannot say what a permit requires.
How does Houston weather affect a restroom trailer?
Heat is the main reason to rent one: Houston has had repeated heat advisories, with temperatures at or above 105 F and a heat index near 112 F. Rain and storms matter for placement and delivery. A trailer on soft ground can be hard to tow out, so a paved spot is best.
Houston summers are long. Hobby Airport logged 190 hours at or above a 105 heat index in June and July in recent years, and July 2022 was the warmest July on record. A cooled room is a real kindness at that point, and for older guests it is more than comfort.
Storm season runs the other way. Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 left more than 2.2 million CenterPoint customers without power. If the weather turns, talk to the provider about whether the event can go ahead and what happens to the trailer. That decision belongs to you and the provider together.
Can I get a trailer for a short notice event?
Sometimes, if a provider has one free. Trailers are fewer than cabins, and popular dates fill early. Call as soon as the date is firm, and treat any date as unconfirmed until the provider says yes. Ask for a standard-unit backup in case no trailer is free.
The Houston calendar is crowded in January for the marathon, in February and March for the rodeo, in April for the Art Car Parade and through the summer. A provider may have most of its trailers committed in those weeks. If your date is close to one of those, ask early and have a plan B ready.
